Depth Shines In Victory

Azusa Pacific improved to 4-0 with a 3-1 win over Point Loma on Saturday evening

After a thrilling 4-3 victory over Cal Poly Pomona, Azusa Pacific looked to continue their success against conference foes, Point Loma. The Cougars showed just how dangerous their attack can be as they defeated the Sea Lions 3-1.

After receiving a couple early yellow cards, the Cougars found a way to impose their will on the game in the first half. Azusa Pacific's Adrian Preciado broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute on a sublime strike which found the back of the net in a hurry.

"It was a great play by Elisha (Burbridge). He was really strong holding the ball up and he laid it off for Adrian who was running off of him," said head coach Dave Blomquist. "It was a two-man interchange that was really insightful, and it was quite the banger from Adrian as well, so that was fun."
Both Preciado and Burbridge entered the match as substitutes and had a noticeable impact, showing the depth of this Cougars roster.

"It is so important. This is a team that has quality in a lot of different players and positions. We've used a number of different starters throughout this year. We had a couple guys out due to injury tonight, and still, guys are stepping up out there and scoring goals and saving goals when called upon," said Blomquist.

Pont Loma found a way to capitalize in the second half, as David Achaerandio slotted a shot past the keeper in the 65th minute to tie the match at 1-1. However, David Kwinn put the Cougars back on top in the 70th minute, gathering a pass from Renan Gomes and calmly finishing the chance.

"It was a good, forward ball from Renan that David got onto well and he took the chance well," said Blomquist.

The Sea Lions continued to battle, but Azusa Pacific was able to add another goal after Bruno Pagani volleyed a cross from Danillo Dias to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead in the 87th minute.

"You work really hard for 90 minutes to create chances to score goals like that," said Blomquist. "When you can score three quality goals in a game, it is fantastic.

Azusa Pacific will take on Concordia on Saturday, September 21 in Irvine as part of their non-conference schedule. Conference play will begin on October 3, when the Cougars travel to Academy of Art.
