SURPRISE, Ariz.-- The Azusa Pacific women's tennis team earned a spot in the NCAA West Regional matches after winning the third place title in the PacWest tournament Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 win over Sonoma State.
Anna Savchenko and
April Wong started out in doubles strong with a 6-3 win on court two, but Sonoma State fired back at the No.1 spot downing
Jacky Wagner and
Kara Hinton 6-3 to settle the score. The Cougars took the doubles point as
Petra Ivankovic and
Audrey Stewart snagged a 6-4 victory at the No. 3 position.
Heading into singles, Carolyn Brooner put a point on the board for the Seawolves at the No. 3 position over APU's
Kara Hinton, winning 6-4, 6-3. At court four,
Jacky Wagner put the Cougars back the lead with a 6-3, 6-0 victory, but Jensyn Warren downed
Petra Ivankovic at the top spot 6-2, 6-4 to give the Cougars no room to breathe. At the bottom two courts, APU stood its ground as
Mikayla Rinker won at the No. 6 spot 6-3, 7-5.
April Wong composed herself in the deciding set to send APU to the postseason with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win.
