HAYWARD, Calif. – Azusa Pacific split a Friday doubleheader against Holy Names, as the Hawks took game one by a 4-2 margin, and then the Cougars bounced back in game number two with a 2-0 shutout victory.
Game One: Holy Names 4, Azusa Pacific 2
Holy Names jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and Azusa Pacific was unable to climb out of the early hole. The Hawks would push the lead to 4-0 with a run in the third inning, with Azusa Pacific scoring a run in both the fourth and fifth inning.
Offensively, four Cougars had a multi-hit game. Junior
Emily Moran went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while junior
Brielle Fraijo, sophomore
Becca Jewett, and junior
Jenna Gorman each had two hits. Gorman had the lone RBI in the game for Azusa Pacific.
Senior
Racqual Espinoza threw the first five innings of the game for the Cougars, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. Freshman
Jahzell Estrada threw one scoreless inning of relief.
Game Two: Azusa Pacific 2, Holy Names 0
Junior
Kat Ung was absolutely dominant in game number two, as she threw a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out seven Holy Names hitters. The lone Hawk hit was the first batter Ung faced in the game, as Cassidy Simon began the bottom of the first with a single off of Ung. Ung would then strike out the next three Holy Names hitters in the inning. Throughout the remaining six innings, Ung retired all but one batter, as she began the bottom of the second allowing a base on balls.
The only runs scored throughout the entirety of game number two on Friday came in the top of the first inning. Senior
Cayla Broussard got things moving for Azusa Pacific right away, as the Cougars lead-off hitter started the game with a single. Broussard then stole both second and third base during Azusa Pacific's ensuing hitter. Broussard was driven in on an RBI double from freshman
Dani Burghardt. Burghardt worked her way to third on a wild pitch, and eventually came across to score with two outs in the inning, when sophomore
Amanda Woods reached safely on a fielding error from the Hawks shortstop.
Up Next: Following Friday's split, Azusa Pacific and Holy Names are right back in action tomorrow, with a Saturday doubleheader set to begin at noon. The Cougars will carry a 22-14 overall record into the games, including a 13-8 PacWest record.
