Softball Claims 3-1 Series Win

Azusa Pacific swept a Saturday doubleheader with Holy Names, winning game one by a 7-3 final, and then winning in extra innings by a 5-2 margin

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cougars claimed a 3-1 series win over Holy Names, as Azusa Pacific swept both games of a Saturday doubleheader. The Cougars took game one 7-3, and then won 5-2 in extra innings in game number two.

Game One: Azusa Pacific 7, Holy Names 3

In the first game of the day, Azusa Pacific had solid offensive production and received a quality start from senior pitcher Megan Mejia. The Cougars opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, when senior Melanie Abzun hit her fifth homerun of the season, which was a solo-shot to left field. However, the Hawks would take the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Holy Names scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead.

The Hawks would hold the lead briefly, as Azusa Pacific scored four runs in the top of the third. The highlight of the inning came from sophomore Becca Jewett, who had a three-RBI double with two outs in the inning, which gave the Cougars a 5-2 lead.

Azusa Pacific would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth, as senior Cayla Broussard had an RBI single that made the score 6-2. Holy Names would score a run in the bottom of the seventh, however, the Cougars would score one more run in the top of the seventh off of an RBI double from sophomore Amanda Woods.

Mejia went six innings to earn her third victory of the season (3-1), as she allowed just two earned runs on six hits. Junior Kat Ung came on in the seventh inning to close out the game with a scoreless bottom of the seventh.

Broussard finished a perfect 4-for-4 in the game, as she had an RBI and a run scored, and also stole two bases. Woods went 2-for-4 from the plate, as she had two doubles with an RBI and a run scored. Jewett finished with a game-high three RBIs.

Game Two: Azusa Pacific 5, Holy Names 2 (8 Innings)

Since no winner emerged after seven innings in game number two, it took an extra inning for Azusa Pacific to claim a Saturday sweep. Through seven innings, the two teams perfectly mirrored one another, as each team scored a run in the first inning, and another run in the fifth inning. With the two sides knotted at 2-2 after seven innings, junior Daniella Toschi ensured that the game would go no longer that eight innings.

Toschi came to the plate in the top of the eighth inning with runners on first and second, and two outs. Abzun and junior Emily Moran represented the go-ahead runs on-base for the Cougars, as each player had singled in the inning. With one swing of the bat, Toschi broke the scoreless tie in a big way, as she launched a ball over the left field fence for a three-run homerun that ultimately gave the Cougars the 5-2 win and series win. For Toschi, it was her fifth homerun of the year. In addition to her game-winning homerun, Toschi went 3-for-4, which was the game-high for hits.

Kat Ung hung tough for all eight innings of game number two in the circle, and she was reward with her 11th win of the season. Over the eight innings, Ung allowed just one earned run on four hits, while striking out seven batters.

Up Next: Azusa Pacific is now 24-14 overall, with a 15-8 PacWest record. The Cougars will continue their trek of 10 road games in five days, as Azusa Pacific will travel to Dominican for a Sunday doubleheader set to begin at 2:00 p.m. The Cougars will then close out the trip with a four game series against Notre Dame de Namur, with doubleheaders on Monday (April 15), and Tuesday (April 16).
