SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Azusa Pacific has pushed its win streak to five games, as the Cougars won both games of Sunday's doubleheader against Dominican, as the Cougars won 3-0 in game one, and then finished the day with a 10-8 victory.
Game One: Azusa Pacific 3, Dominican 0
Senior
Racqual Espinoza threw a complete game shutout for the Cougars, while the offense put on a bit of a power display in the fourth inning to gain all the distance Azusa Pacific needed for the win.
Following three innings of scoreless softball, the Cougars came to the plate in the top of fourth inning looking to breakthrough. The breakthrough came quickly, as sophomore
Becca Jewett led off for the Cougars in the inning, and hit a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left center for a solo homerun to give Azusa Pacific a 1-0 lead. Junior
Emily Moran stepped up to the plate as the second hitter in the inning, as she doubled the third pitch she saw to the left center gap and put herself in scoring position with no one out in the inning. Moran would not have to wait long on second, as junior
Daniella Toschi sent the first pitch she saw in the ensuing Cougar at-bat, over the left field fence for a two-run homerun that grew the Cougars lead to 3-0.
With a three run lead in her pocket to start the bottom of the fourth, Espinoza continued her dominant performance over the final three innings of play, as she earned her 10
th win of the season.
Game Two: Azusa Pacific 10, Dominican 8
Azusa Pacific jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in game number two, as the Cougars scored three runs in the first inning, and then added two more runs in the second inning. However, Dominican erased the early deficit with a huge six run inning in the bottom of the second, as the Penguins took a 6-5 lead.
Dominican would have the lead briefly, as Azusa Pacific scored five unanswered runs. The Cougars scored one run in the third inning, and then two runs in both the fourth and the sixth inning to take a 10-6 lead. Dominican would pull within two runs in the bottom of the sixth, as the Penguins scored two runs in the inning.
Azusa Pacific scored 10 runs on 13 hits in the game. Seven different Cougars recorded at least one hit in the game, while five different Cougars had at least one RBI. Senior
Cayla Broussard went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base. Junior
Brielle Fraijo finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman
Dani Burghardt went 1-for-3, and had a team-high three RBIs. Senior
Melanie Abzun finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Moran had a 2-for-3 game, with one RBI and one run scored. Toschi was 1-for-4 with an RBI double.
While Espinoza started game two as well for the Cougars, junior
Kat Ung came on in relief and claimed her 12
th win of the season. Espinoza went 1.1 innings, while Ung went 5.2 innings.
Up Next: On the road trip, the Cougars are currently 5-1, and have improved their overall record to 26-14, and 17-8 in the PacWest. Azusa Pacific will close out the trip with a four game series against Notre Dame de Namur, as the two teams will play doubleheaders on Monday, April 15, and Tuesday, April 16. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
