AZUSA, Calif. -- Petra Ivankovic registered the lone point for NCAA Division II's No. 12-ranked Azusa Pacific in a 6-1 defeat to Ball State (NCAA Division I) Thursday afternoon.
Ivankovic registered a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sarah Swiderski, although by the time she wrapped up her singles win, Ball State had already claimed the doubles point and four of the other five singles matches. She also claimed a win in doubles with Audrey Stewart, but Ball State won the other two doubles matchups to claim the doubles point. p>
With the defeat, the Cougars fell to 5-3 on the season, with two of those defeats coming against NCAA Division I opponents. Ball State improved to 9-2 overall.
Results
Doubles: Ball State picked up a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, which was quickly answered by a 6-4 Azusa Pacific win from the No. 3 doubles tandem of Petra Ivankovic and Audrey Stewart. That put the doubles point up for grabs at court two, where Kara Hinton and Courtney Page nearly forced a set tiebreaker before Ball State's Victoria Sec and Sarah Swiderski were able to fend off the Cougars for a 7-5 win.
Singles: Ball State picked up four consecutive wins in singles, all in straight sets, before Ivankovic posted her 6-3, 6-2 win over Swiderski at No. 1 singles. Katia Betancourt pushed the opening set against Isabelle Dohanics at No. 5 to a tiebreaker, but Dohanics prevailed in the tiebreaker, 7-4, before picking up a 6-3 win in the second set to finish off the victory for Ball State.
What's Next: Azusa Pacific returns to action against Division II competition on Saturday, March 9, hosting Division II's No. 1-ranked Barry (Fla.) in an 11:00 a.m. matchup.
