Box Score AZUSA, Calif. -- The No. 13-ranked Azusa Pacific men's tennis team posted a 7-0 win against NAIA No. 17 Westmont College Wednesday afternoon to open the 2019 season, winning the season opener for the eighth consecutive season.
Results
Doubles: Battling from the get-go, the Cougars won two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point to start the match. The tandem of
Ethan Smith and
Ronald Kang got a strong start with a 6-2 win at the No.3 position, and
Jesse Haas and Jakob Scnaitter prevailed for the second doubles win at the No. 1 slot, 6-4.
Singles: Jakob Schnaitter recorded the Cougars first singles win with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No.1 spot over Jordan Strandness.
Jesse Haas added a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 5 slot, while
Ryan Nuno registered a 6-3, 6-4 win over J.T. Jones at the No. 2 position to clinch the team victory.
The singles sweep continued with
Leyton Bohren's 6-3, 7-5 win at No 4, and
Dillon Barnard bounced back from an opening-set tiebreak defeat to win the second set, 6-2. Barnard captured the win with a 10-8 victory in a super tiebreaker over Mark Polowczak at the No. 6 position, and
Ronald Kang wrapped up the day with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.
The Cougars travel to San Diego Friday to take on UC San Diego at 12:00 pm before facing Pacific West Conference rival Point Loma on Saturday at 11:00 am.
