Azusa Pacific Cruises Past Sunbirds

#1 Azusa Pacific beat Fresno Pacific 6-1 on Saturday night in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. -- Still ranked as the top team in the nation, Azusa Pacific put its undefeated record on the line against Fresno Pacific on the road. The Cougars bagged six goals from five players en route to a 6-1 victory over the Sunbirds. With the victory, Azusa Pacific clinched a share of the PacWest Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Super regional.

Azusa Pacific opened the scoring when James Ndubueze put away a pass from Danillo Dias in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead. Fresno Pacific would grab a goal back, however, when Jose Vargas found the back of the net in the 33rd minute. The match was not level for long, though, as Arturo Astorga scored his seventh goal of the season just two minutes later.

From then on, Azusa Pacific controlled the match entirely, scoring in the 36th, 56th, 82nd, and 83rd minutes to secure the win. David Kwinn finished the match with two goals, Astorga finished with a goal and an assist, and Gregoire Diep contributed a goal and two assists. Zac Ingalls put away his first goal of the season in the 83rd minute to cap the scoring for Azusa Pacific.

The Cougars finished the night with 25 shots and 18 on goal, forcing 12 saves from the Fresno Pacific keeper.

With the win, Azusa Pacific stays atop the PacWest Conference with two matches remaining. The Cougars will travel to Notre Dame de Namur on November 14 and Dominican on November 16 before finding out where they stand in postseason play. Previous polls list Azusa Pacific at number one both in Super Region 4 and in the nation.
