BELMONT, Calif. – Azusa Pacific clinched its second consecutive PacWest championship and third PacWest title in the program's history, as the Cougars defeated host Notre Dame de Namur 4-1 on Thursday afternoon.
Azusa Pacific got things rolling in the 18
th minute of action, as
Arturo Astorga scored his eighth goal of the season to put the Cougars up 1-0. He was assisted by
Danillo Dias, who ended up with two assists in the match.
Less than 10 minutes later,
David Kwinn added to the Cougar lead when he found the back of the net for his 13
th goal of the season. Kwinn was set up on the score by
Romio Sislian, who notched his second assist of the season.
The Cougars extended their lead early in the second half, as
James Ndubueze scored his first of two goals in the match in the 48
th minute. Dias and Sislian once again set-up the Cougar attack, as they were each credited with their second assist of the match.
The Argonauts scored their only goal of the match in the 51
st minute, as Antony Andoyan was assisted by Josh Santillian to cut the Cougar lead down to 3-1.
Ndubueze closed out the match with his second goal of the day, as his 16
th goal of the season gave Azusa Pacific a 4-1 lead in the 89
th minute. Astorga posted his team-leading 10
th assist of the season on the play.
With the PacWest title in the bag, the Cougars clinched a birth into the NCAA Division II Super Regionals. Currently, Azusa Pacific holds the number-one ranking in Super Region 4 and would host the first and second round matches on Thursday, Nov. 21 and Saturday, Nov. 23. The eighth and ninth seed would play at 7:00 pm on Thursday, and the Cougars would await the winner on Saturday at 6:00 pm. The selection show for the NCAA Division II tournament will be on Monday, Nov. 18, at 10:00 am (PST).Â
Azusa Pacific closes out the regular season against Dominican on Saturday, November 16 at 1:30 pm. The Cougars have a chance to make some history in the regular season finale, as they could become the first-ever PacWest team to finish undefeated in all matches.
