Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Cole Brouwer

#1 Azusa Pacific Keeps Re-Writing History

For the first time ever, a PacWest men's soccer team finished the regular season undefeated, as Azusa Pacific defeated Dominican 5-0.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Never before had a PacWest team finish with an undefeated record over the course of an entire regular season. But that's old news, as Azusa Pacific defeated Dominican 5-0 on Saturday to close out the regular season with a perfect 18-0 record.

Azusa Pacific opened their account quickly in the first half, after Arturo Astorga combined with Renan Gomes and found the bottom left corner from 18 yards out for the 1-0 lead. Victor Ramos added another goal in the first half on a sublime play from James Ndubueze. Ndubueze chipped a pass into Ramos, who then chipped the keeper with one touch for goal number two.

Ndubueze found the back of the net himself not long after to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead at the break. After the half, Orlando Lozano netted his second goal of the season in the 48th minute, finishing off a cross from Romio Sislian. Astorga capped the scoring for the Cougars in the 75th minute after he collected a pass in the box from Carlos Granados and chipped the keeper.

On the season, Azusa Pacific finished with three double-digit goal scorers, scoring 59 goals on the season and allowing just 13. James Ndubueze ended the regular season with 17 goals and two assists. David Kwinn finished the campaign with 13 goals and three assists while Arturo Astorga contributed 10 goals and 11 assists.

Of the 14 years which the PacWest has had men's soccer, the closest team who nearly finished undefeated was California Baptist at 17-1-2. Prior to that team, the lowest number of loses in a season was three.

With the regular season complete, the back-to-back PacWest Champions and number-one ranked team in the nation for seven straight weeks now awaits the details of their NCAA Tournament schedule. Currently, Azusa Pacific holds the number-one ranking in Super Region 4 and would host the first and second round matches on Thursday, Nov. 21 and Saturday, Nov. 23. The eighth and ninth seed would play at 7:00 pm on Thursday, and the Cougars would await the winner on Saturday at 6:00 pm. The selection show for the NCAA Division II tournament will be on Monday, Nov. 18, at 3:30 pm (PST).
