BELMONT, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific took on Notre Dame de Namur on the road, and while the Cougars were ready to get another win under their belt, no one was expecting the way in which they got the result. Coming back from down 3-0 in the first half, Azusa Pacific scored five goals in the second half to take a 6-5 victory.
The Argonauts opened the scoring in the 11
th minute, when Vanessa Sanchez got in behind the defense and slotted a ball past the keeper. Sanchez scored her second just two minutes later to double the lead before Alexis Prieto smashed a half volley into the back of the net in the 22
nd minute.
"Even down 3-0 we were having some chances and I felt like if we could get one before the half, we had a good chance to make a comeback," said head coach
Brooke Lincoln.
That chance came in the 31
st minute, when
Randi Macadangdang connected with
Emmy Koflanovich, who beat the keeper to the far post.
"I told the girls at half that we were going to win 4-3, and I truly believed we were," said Lincoln.
That belief turned into reality, as the Cougars offense exploded onto the scene in the second half with 22 shots and five goals.
Ella Romero followed the rebound on her own shot and found the top right corner in the 54
th minute. Then
Maddy Morrison cleaned up a shot from Koflanovich just seconds later to tie the match at 3-3. Macadangdang gave the Cougars a 4-3 lead after taking the ball from the NDNU defense and using some nifty footwork to get past the keeper in the 74
th minute.
However, the Argonauts were not going down without a fight. They found a fourth in the 80
th minute, scoring on a rebounded shot from the goal line to tie the match up at 4-4.
However the speed of Macadangdang and Koflanovich was too much for the NDNU defense to handle, as Macadandang sprung Koflanovich into space again where she beat the keeper 1-on-1 for her second, and the Cougars fifth, goal of the match in the 82
nd minute.
Mackenzie Coleman grabbed what would ultimately be the winner in the 84
th minute, combining with
Kayla Grisham and Macadangdang to make the score 6-4.
Notre Dame de Namur pulled a goal back in the 86
th minute, but Azusa Pacific held on for the 6-5 victory on the road.
"I was really proud of the entire team today and their contributions," said Lincoln.
The Cougars totaled 27 shots on the match with 19 on goal, forcing 13 saves. Koflanovich had herself a career day, shooting 10 times, with seven on goal and two goals and an assist. Macadangdang provided a goal and three assists off of the bench for the Cougars.
Azusa Pacific will close out the 2019 season at Dominican on Saturday, November 16. The match will begin at 11:00 a.m.
