Azusa, Calif.-- Azusa Pacific collected its eighth 3-0 Pacwest sweep Friday night back at home in the Felix Event Center after defeating Notre Dame de Namur (25-11, 25-18, 25-20). WIth the win, the Cougars improve 17-4 on the season and 11-2 in PacWest play while the Argonauts drop 2-20 on the season and 1-13 in conference play.
Azusa Pacific now has fifteen consecutive wins at home, which extends the program's longest home win streak in program history.
Senior Sara Wagenveld led the Cougars with 12 kills and one block in the match, while finishing with a .524 hitting percentage. Freshman Annaka Jorgenson contributed 10 kills and registered 15 digs while freshman Maggie Nielsen collected a season high 23 assists and four digs.
How It Happened: Eight of Azusa Pacific's 11 wins have been three-set sweeps, and it seemed that Friday's matchup with the Argonauts would follow that pattern after the Cougars led wire-to-wire in the 25-11 opening-set win.
Jorgenson dominated the opening set with six kills and six digs in the set, as the Cougars cruised their way to a 14-point win.
In the second set, Notre Dame de Namur held the lead after scoring the opening four points, but the Cougars quickly controlled the set by answering with an 11-3 run to hold a 15-11 lead. Azusa Pacific then blew the set wide open, scoring six out of the last seven points with a Wagenveld kill before cruising to the 25-18 win.
In the final frame, the Argonauts jumped out in the final frame scoring the first three points before the Cougars rallied back and collected the next four points. The Cougars never trailed again as two back-to-back kills from Svagdis helped extend Azusa Pacific's lead 11-5. On match point, Notre Dame de Namur rallied back scoring five straight points to close in the score 24-20, but a Jorgenson kill but the final frame away to secure another PacWest victory for the Cougars.
What's Next: Azusa Pacific will be back in the Felix Event Center tomorrow November 2, for a 3:00 p.m. matchup against Dominican.
