Cougars Pick Up First Conference Win

Azusa Pacific women's soccer defeated Holy Names 2-0 for their first PacWest victory of the 2019 season

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific women's soccer defeated Holy Names 2-0 on Saturday afternoon for its first conference victory of the season. The Cougars also remained perfect against conference foe Holy Names, improving their all-time record to 10-0. The Cougars used two second half goals to secure the victory and improved to 5-3-1 on the season.

The two teams were locked in a scoreless tie through the first half before the Cougars scored the only two goals of the game in the final 45 minutes. The first goal was scored by junior forward Maddy Morrison in the 59th minute. Junior defender Chloe Edwards was awarded the assist for her first of the season while Morrison's goal was her third of the season which is tied for the team-high. The second goal was scored by Abi Hume in the 79th minute, this was her second goal of the season.

The Cougars dominated throughout the game as they outshot Holy Names 28-7. Of the 28 shots for Azusa Pacific, 17 of them were on goal. Azusa Pacific had 18 shots in the first half while freshman midfielder Katie Prado led the team with five shots with three of them on goal. Freshman forward Brooke Bern and junior midfielder Kaylee Niccol each had three total shots while two apiece were on goal. 

Azusa Pacific will have a week to prepare for its next game, as the Cougars take on Point Loma on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1:00 p.m. The PacWest opponents met earlier this season in a non-conference affair, as Azusa Pacific defeated Point Loma 1-0 on September 26 in Azusa.
