Swim & Dive Closes Out Strong Weekend

Azusa Pacific defeated Alaska Fairbanks 110-94 on Saturday; diving team excelled at Lancer Diving Invitational

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Azusa Pacific finished up its trip to Alaska with its second dual meet victory in as many days, as the Cougars beat Alaska Fairbanks 110-94 on Saturday.

In the opening event of the day, the 200 yard medley relay, Fairbanks took first place and 11 points, however, the Cougars took second and third to grab a collective six points.

In the first two individual races, an Azusa Pacific swimmer claimed first place and nine points, as Hannah Frey touched the wall first in the 1650 yard freestyle and Riley Smith won the 200 yard freestyle. Azusa Pacific picked up an additional four points from Tessie Scavone in the 200 free, as she came in second behind Smith.

Other first place finishes for the Cougars came in the 200 yard backstroke (Amanda Anderson), 500 yard freestyle (Riley Smith), and the 400 yard IM (Anderson).  Azusa Pacific would have a first or second place finisher in all but one of the individual races on the day, and head coach Tim Kyle pointed to the Cougars' ability to grab second place in multiple races as the key to claiming the meet victory. "Without second place finishes from Sydney Benveniste, Holly Williams and Tessie Scavone, we would not have won today," said coach Kyle.

Azusa Pacific closed out the meet with a victory in the 400 yard medley relay, as Williams, Sarah Eichhorn, Anais Hacobian and Monet Favreau posted a winning time of 3:21.93.

"It's always difficult to travel to Alaska and compete," said coach Kyle, "The Nanooks (Fairbanks) are a talented team and coached extremely well… we persevered today!"

DIVE TEAM:

While the swimmers were up in Alaska, the Azusa Pacific diving team traveled much closer to Riverside, Calif. for the Lancer Diving Invitational.

The Cougars had an impressive showing Saturday, as Azusa Pacific finished first and second in the one-meter, and first and third in the three-meter dive. In the one-meter, Melia Stout won with a score of 261.10, and teammate Amy Crayne followed her up in the standings with a score of 251.10.

In the three-meter, Stout won her second event of the day, as she finished with a score of 256.70. Crayne took home third place, scoring a 248.75.

Freshman Briana Medvecki also competed for Azusa Pacific, as she posted a score of 196.30 in the one-meter, and 197.85 in the three-meter.

Azusa Pacific swim & dive will next compete on Friday, November 1, when the Cougars travel to rival Biola for a duel meet. The two teams will then matchup the following day, Saturday, November 2, in Azusa.
