AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific broke a scoreless tie late in the first half, but Sonoma State answered and pulled away for a 4-1 win over the Cougars Wednesday night at the Cougar Soccer Complex. Throughout the majority of the first half, Azusa Pacific dictated the pace of play and created opportunities that put pressure on Sonoma State.
On the Cougars' seventh shot of the game, they broke the 0-0 tie with
Kaylee Nicoll's goal in the 38
th minute. Senior
Kellie Yoshihara chipped a pass over the Sonoma State back line, and Nicoll was on the receiving end . She separated from the defense, giving her an opportunity to take a touch and set up her shot, which found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. However, Sonoma State answered with a goal of their own less than a minute later, tying the game at one goal apiece with Molly Murphy's goal after a scramble for the ball in front of the goal.

Sonoma State's goal in the 39
th minute not only tied the game, but gave the Seawolves momentum heading into halftime. The Seawolves scored three more goals in the second half, with a goal in the 48
th minute, a penalty kick in the 68
th minute, and a final insurance goal in the 80
th minute.

Sonoma State finished the game with 13 shots, while Azusa Pacific had 11 of their own. Junior Emily Koflanovich led the Cougars with four shots, including three on goal. Junior
Emilie Allum and sophomore
Haley Bostard each had three shots, with one on goal. Sophomore
Isabelle Decker played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cougars, collecting four saves in the game.

Following the loss, Azusa Pacific is now 0-2 on the young season, seeking to bounce back on the road against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, September 8, at 7:00 p.m. The Cougars return home next Thursday, September 13 for a nonconference matchup against Dixie State. Following an exhibition game on the road against Westmont on Saturday, September 15, Azusa Pacific kicks off its PacWest schedule with three straight games in Hawai'i.
