POMONA, Calif. -- In its first road contest of the 2018 season, Azusa Pacific allowed two first-half goals to Cal Poly Pomona, which held on to the lead in a scoreless second half to post a 2-0 win over the Cougars.
Cal Poly Pomona hit the crossbar twice in the middle of the first half while the game was still scoreless, but the Broncos broke through twice in the final seven minutes of the half to take a 2-0 edge.
The Broncos scored first in the 39th minute after Azusa Pacific cleared a corner kick out of the area. Cal Poly Pomona sent the ball back in over the back line, and Samantha Putnam timed her run perfectly to scored on a breakaway chance for her first goal of the season. The Broncos struck again on a free kick from 20 yards out, as Natalie Di Angelo tucked a shot just inside the frame of the goal, deflecting off the bottom of the crossbar and the inside of the right post before going across the goal line.
Azusa Pacific bounced back with an aggressive attack at the start of the second half, picking up an early corner kick and a pair of quality chances in the first 15 minutes after halftime. One of the Cougars' best chances came when Bri Haskins and Kaylee Nicoll gave Randi Macadangdang a shot in the box which skimmed off the top of the crossbar in the 58th minute.
Although both teams generated chances in the second half, neither team was able to capitalize, and Cal Poly Pomona's 2-0 lead held up for the win.
With the defeat, Azusa Pacific is now 0-3 on the season and seeks a non-conference victory on Thursday, Sept. 13, when it hosts former PacWest rival Dixie State, which is now a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Sounds from the game:
"We have yet to put a full game together this season. You find out what you are made of when your backs are against the wall. I think you find out who you are as a person and who you really are as a player, and we talked about that a little (at halftime). We can either hang it up and feel sorry for ourselves or take ownership of our game and start working on things individually. As coaches, we're going to keep trying to find where the pieces of the puzzle need to go." -- Head Coach Brooke Lincoln
