Men’s Soccer Draws With Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Gabriel Costa scored his fourth goal of the season to give Azusa Pacific its lone goal in a 1-1 tie on the road in a non-conference matchup with historical soccer rival Westmont.

After a scoreless first half, Costa gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute, benefiting from Grégoire Diep's takeaway in the midfield. Diep played the ball over the top into the Westmont penalty box, where Costa eluded a pair of defenders as he brought the ball to his left with two touches into the middle of the box. He beat the goalkeeper with a left-footed shot towards the right side of the net.

The one-goal lead lasted just over 20 minutes, until Westmont pulled even with Lucky Puengrod's breakaway score in the 74th minute. Puengrod knocked the ball away from a Cougar defender and put the ball away on the quick breakaway with a left-footed shot as he went down about 15 yards out from the goal.

The Cougars finished with a 17-11 edge in shots, although Westmont created four corner kick opportunities without conceding any corner kicks to Azusa Pacific. Nathanael Linquist played all 110 minutes in goal and made three saves.

Costa has now scored in three of Azusa Pacific's first five games, and he currently leads the PacWest in scoring with four goals on the season.

The tie gives Azusa Pacific a 3-1-1 overall record heading into next week's PacWest-opening road trip in Hawai'i, which kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 20, at Chaminade. Westmont, which competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), is now 4-2-2 on the season.
