AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific put together a late flurry of shots after falling behind in its season opener, but Cal State L.A. held on to claim a 2-0 win over the Cougars Thursday evening at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
Goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado registered the shutout for Cal State L.A. with three saves, all in the second half including a pair in the final 10 minutes as Azusa Pacific built up its offensive pressure. Cal State L.A. scored its first goal in the 13th minute by taking advantage of a giveaway in the midfield. Madison Mader finished off the opportunity with a strike from the top of the 18-yard box.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Irma Pinzon capitalized on a scoring opportunity from six yards out after a corner kick to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute.
At that point, Azusa Pacific had only registered one shot, a header wide of the goal from Kennedy Christie, but the next scoring chance came just two minutes later when Emilie Allum put a shot on goal that was saved by Maldonado. In the 83rd minute, Abi Hume and Haley Bostard fired shots within seconds of each other, but Hume's glanced off a defender while Maldonado saved Bostard's effort.
Azusa Pacific returns to action in one week, hosting No. 25-ranked Sonoma State on Thursday, Sept. 6.
