Cougars Come Back Falls Short

Irvine, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific dropped today's PacWest conference doubleheader to Concordia Irvine who was recently ranked second in the West Region. The Cougars held the Eagles to one run in the first game (1-0) and fought till the end in game two (9-2).

Junior Cayla Broussard led the Cougars offense in game one going 2-3. Sophomore Jenna Gorman led the Cougars offense in game two going 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs and Racqual Espinoza went 1-2 and drove in the other two runs.

Together Gorman and Espinoza accounted for all four of the Cougars RBIs in game two.

GAME 1: Concordia Irvine 1, Azusa Pacific 0

Left-handed sophomore Kat Ung made her 22 appearance in the circle against the Eagles of Concordia Irvine.

Broussard recorded the Cougars two hits in the game, she currently leads the Cougars offense with a .363 batting average (49-139).

GAME 2: Concordia Irvine 9, Azusa Pacific 4

The Cougars took its first lead of the day early in the first inning when Illiana Jimenez scored off of a sacrifice fly ball hit by Racqual Espinoza. The Eagles tied the game 1-1 with a timely single to left field.

After two innings of scoreless softball, Illiana Jimenez scored for the second time off of Espinoza who laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Azusa Pacific held a 2-1 lead as they entered the sixth inning. The Eagles strung together a handful of singles and a 3-run home run to come back and take a 9-2 lead over the Cougars.

Behind 9-2 the Cougars placed runners in scoring position, Jenna Gorman stepped up to the plate and hit a double to left center to score Cayla Broussard and Illiana Jimenez. Despite the Cougars two-out rally, the Cougars fell short 9-2.
