Cougars Claim Cornerstone Series With Split

LA MIRADA, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacific split Friday's PacWest doubleheader at Biola, taking the opener by a 7-2 margin before dropping game two, 6-2, to claim a season series victory over Biola and help Azusa Pacific's athletic department clinch the inaugural Cornerstone Cup Rivalry Trophy presented by West Coast Sand & Gravel, which is awarded annually to the athletic department with the most success in head-to-head matchups throughout the year.

GAME 1: Azusa Pacific 7, Biola 2

The Cougars' offense was led by freshmen Becca Jewett and Amanda Woods. Jewett went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs, and Woods was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Emily Moran and Kayla Jimenez both added two-hit games to Azusa Pacific's 14-hit attack, with Moran going 2-for-3 while Jimenez was 2-for-4.

Kat Ung threw the 15th complete game of her sophomore campaign and earned her 12th win in the circle, holding the Eagles to two runs on just four hits.

After two silent innings, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after Melanie Abzun and Cayla Broussard scored on Jewett's two-out double to left field. The Eagles cut the lead in half, 2-1, with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.

The Cougars added to their lead in the fifth inning, when senior Erinn Jaramillo's one-out single down the left field line scored Jenna Gorman from second base. Jaramillo advanced to second on the throw and scored on Woods' double to right center to make the score 4-1.

In the top of the sixth inning, Illiana Jimenez and Gorman both scored on Jewett's one-out double to right field, and Jewett scored on a two-out single from Woods to extend the lead to 7-1.

Biola centerfielder Areana Ramos led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run for the final score in the Cougars' 7-2 victory.

GAME 2: Biola 6, Azusa Pacific 2

Azusa Pacific had four players go 1-for-3 at the plate, and Jaramillo went 1-for-1 and drew two walks.

The Cougars were first to score, as Illiana Jimenez reached in the top of the third with a one-out bunt single and scored on Jewett's two-out double to right center. Jaramillo followed with an RBI single which scored Jewett to make it a 2-0 lead.

That score held until the fifth inning, when Biola rallied for four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to claim a 6-2 win for the doubleheader split.

Azusa Pacific returns home Saturday for a noon doubleheader against Dominican, celebrating its four seniors after the final games of the season.
