Box Score 2 Azusa, Calif. -- The Cougars opened its weekend four-game series against Holy Names with a 19-4 run rule in game one, then took game two 4-2. Friday afternoons sweep over the Hawks is the first PacWest sweep for the Cougars this season.
GAME 1: Azusa Pacific 19, Holy Names 4
Kat Ung saw her eighteenth start in the circle this season, where she faced eighteen batters and held the Hawks to two runs in four innings pitched. Gaby Grabowski entered the game in the top of the fourth inning to help Cougars close its double-digit victory.
Azusa Pacific took an early 2-0 lead over the Holy Names in the first inning when the Cougars had runners on the corners. Cayla Broussard took an aggressive lead off of first base and drew a throw down from the catcher to allow Illiana Jimenez time to score from third. Sophomore catcher Jenna Gorman traded places with Broussard on the next pitch when she hit a double to left field.
The Cougars continued its scoring effort in the second inning when freshman Amanda Woods hit her fourth home run and tied freshman Becca Jewett with the most home runs this season. Woods home run scored Melanie Abzun and Emily Moran to increase the Cougars lead over the Hawks 5-0.
Holy Names had a string of timely hits in the third inning to score twice and make the score 5-2.
Freshman Jewett hit her fifth home run early in the count to lead the Cougars in home runs once again. Azusa Pacific went on to score two more runs before the inning came to an end. Kayla Jimenez scored off of Morans single to left and Woods hit a sacrifice fly to scored Moran.
The Cougars hit through the lineup in the fourth when they double their score and crossed the plate eight times.
The fourth inning began with a string of RBI's to get the scoring started, then senior Erinn Jaramillo hit a two-run home run over the left field line. Both Illiana Jimenez and singled to score a pair each. The Cougars scored two off of Jewett and Morans single, then scored one more time when Kayla Jimenez walked in.
The Hawks hit a first pitch two-run home run late in the fifth inning to make the final score 19-4.
GAME 2: Azusa Pacific 4, Holy Names 2
The Hawks hit a single to left field early in the first inning to get on the board first, they held a 1-0 until the bottom of the second.
Anneliese Davis singled through the left side to score Jaramillo and tie the game 1-1.
Holy Names answered back with a solo home run taking a brief lead over the Cougars.
The Cougars secured its win in the third inning when Jewett and Broussard scored off of Racqual Espinoza's single and Woods doubled down the line to score Espinoza.
