Softball Swept To End Hawai'i Trip

HILO, HAWAI'I -- Azusa Pacific wrapped up its spring break trip to Hawai'i by dropping two Pacific West Conference games against Hawai'i Hilo Thursday afternoon. Today's 4-0 and 8-6 losses bring the Cougars' overall record to 5-14 and 1-7 in PacWest play.

GAME 1: Hawai'i Hilo 4, Azusa Pacific 0

After four innings of scoreless softball, the Vulcans crossed the plate four times with four hits for the game's only runs, all with two outs.

Junior Cayla Broussard led the Cougars' offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate for two of her team's three hits. In sophomore Kat Ung's ninth start of the season, she was charged with the loss, although she took a shutout into the fifth inning and posted her seventh complete-game of the season.

GAME 2: Hawai'i Hilo 8, Azusa Pacific 6

After two shutout innings from both teams, the Cougars attacked first in the third inning, crossing the plate four times. Megan Tucker hit a bases-loaded single to left to score Amanda Woods, and Erinn Jaramillo's single to right center scored Broussard and Illiana Jimenez. Tucker capitalized on a Vulcan error and scored the Cougars' fourth run of the inning before the Vulcans answered with five runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Junior Gaby Grabowski threw two shutout innings to start the game before Hawai'i Hilo registered four consecutive one-out hits in what turned out to be a five-run third inning.

Megan Mejia came in for Grabowski and silenced the Vulcans in the fourth and fifth inning, giving the Cougars an opportunity to take back the lead in the fifth when Becca Jewett launched a two-run home run.

The Vulcans tied up the score 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI double down the left field line.

After a scoreless seventh, the Cougars got the potential go-ahead run to third with two outs but couldn't convert, and the Vulcans finished off the sweep with Bailey Gaspar's two-run walk-off home run.

The Cougars return home for a conference doubleheader against Academy of Art on Wednesday, March 14, at 4:00 p.m.
