Split Stalls Midseason Momentum

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific's eight-game win streak was snapped in a 12-9, 10-inning defeat to Holy Names before the Cougars bounced back for a 3-2 win to salvage a split and claim the series win over the visiting Hawks.

Despite the split, Azusa Pacific has won each of its first five series of PacWest play plus all three of its non-conference series, and the Cougars reached the halfway point of the 40-game PacWest schedule with a record of 27-3 overall (17-3 PacWest).

Holy Names out-hit the Cougars in both games of the doubleheader, collecting 20 hits to Azusa Pacific's 17, although HNU pitchers issued 16 walks and hit 3 batters to provide another 19 baserunners to the Cougar offense. Azusa Pacific left 23 runners on base over the two games, stranding 13 in the opener while leaving another 10 on base in the second game.

Despite the setback in the opener, Dillon Miyashiro dealt 9 strikeouts and held Holy Names to two runs to earn the complete-game win in the seven-inning nightcap.

What It Means: Azusa Pacific maintained a four-game lead over its nearest PacWest challenger, as second-place Point Loma won three of four games of its road series this week at California Baptist. Third-place Biola split the first two games of a series with Academy of Art which concludes with a Sunday doubleheader.

How It Happened (Game 1): The Cougars committed a season-high five errors while leaving 13 runners on base, and the inefficiency in both areas ended up costing the victory. Despite the miscues, Azusa Pacific was able to get the game into extra innings, where Evan Maecker hit a two-run single to lead HNU to a three-run 10th inning.

The Cougars led early, scoring twice in the second for a 2-0 lead and adding two more on a Tim Lichty home run in the third inning for a 4-1 lead. In the top of the fourth, Holy Names pulled even with three runs on four hits and two errors. After Sean Aspinall hit a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks responded with another three-run frame, again taking advantage of a pair of errors from Azusa Pacific to take a 7-6 lead.

Justin Gomez delivered a game-tying two-out single in the bottom of the fifth, part of a 2-for-4, 2-RBI performance from the junior catcher to help lead the Cougar offense. Both teams pushed two runs across in the seventh, and the 9-9 score held up through the next two innings to force extra innings.

How It Happened (Game 2): Azusa Pacific was error-free in the second game, and the only damage allowed by Miyashiro was a two-run home run off the bat of Jahshua Jones, who hit two home runs in Friday's doubleheader and brought his season total to four with his third-inning two-run shot that tied the game at 2-2.

The Cougars got on the board first with two runs in the first inning, turning a bases-loaded fielder's choice into a pair of runs on a wild throw from the shortstop. Holy Names tied it on Jones' home run in the third, but Gomez put Azusa Pacific in front for good with a two-out single to right-center which scored Grant Gamble from second base.

Miyashiro took care of the rest, firing four scoreless frames to finish the game and preserve the one-run victory. He retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced, including seven strikeouts in the final four frames. He tied his career-high in strikeouts while improving to 6-0 on the season with his third complete game.

Inside The Box Score: Azusa Pacific is 1-2 in extra-inning games this year.

Gomez was 3-for-8 on the day with 3 RBIs, while Osvaldo Tovalin went 3-for-9.

Pablo O'Connor was 1-for-4 in the opener with his eighth double of the year, extending his hitting streak to 12 games before he was 0-for-1 with 3 walks in the nightcap to reset his streak.

Azusa Pacific drew 29 walks in the 4-game series, including 16 walks Saturday.

Holy Names entered the weekend series with three home runs as a team. Jones doubled the team's home run total by himself with three home runs in the series.

What's Next: Azusa Pacific's week off from Pacific West Conference play comes at the halfway point of the conference schedule. Up next for the Cougars is an eight-game road trip to Hawai'i, starting with a four-game series at Hawai'i Hilo April 9-10, followed by another four-game set at Hawai'i Pacific (April 13-16).
