Turlock, Calif. -- The Cougars walked away from day one of the Tournament of Champions with two wins and one loss. Over the three-game day, the Cougars held their opponents to a total of three runs. Azusa Pacific faced Simon Fraser, Saint Martin's, and Northwest Nazarene.Â
Kat Ung retired a career-high eight batters and held the Simon Fraser to a single hit in her thirteenth start this season.
Game 1: Azusa Pacific 4, Simon Fraser 1
Azusa Pacific's offense held its own with nine hits, led by freshman Becca Jewett who went 3-for-4 at the plate.
In the top of the first inning, the Cougars got on the board when Cayla Broussard took advantage of a wild pitch that got past Simon Fraser's catcher.
Azusa Pacific's scoring efforts continued into the third inning when sophomore catcher Jenna Gorman singled up the middle and scored both Broussard and Amanda Woods.
The fourth and final Cougar run was scored by Erinn Jaramillo off of a single hit by Jewett.
The Cougars gave up a solo home run over the left field line in the seventh inning to make the final score 4-1.
Game 2: Saint Martin's 2, Azusa Pacific 1
Junior Gaby Grabowski threw her first complete game as a Cougar; she struck out three Saints.
Illiana Jimenez went 3-for-4
It was a close game from the very beginning, both teams crossed the plate once in the second inning. Anneliese Davis singled up the middle to the second baseman and scored Jewett from third.
The two teams stayed tied until the fifth inning when Saint Martin's took the final 2-1 lead off a single up the middle to score the winning run from third.
Game 3: Azusa Pacific 3, Northwest Nazarene 0
Racqual Espinoza threw her second full seven-inning game of the season; in her seventh start of the season.
The Cougars took an early lead in the first two innings.
Broussard was the first Cougar to cross the plate, courtesy of Jewett's single down the left field line.
In the second inning Amanda Woods hit a single to third base and scored Kayla Jimenez, the scoring continued when Woods scored off of a wild pitch.
