Cougars Complete A Cornerstone Sweep

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific held Biola to a single run in a doubleheader sweep Friday afternoon, posting 4-1 and 4-0 victories over the Eagles to improve to 8-15 overall and 4-8 in PacWest play after winning three of four games this week.

Cayla Broussard and Erinn Jaramillo led the Cougars at the plate. Broussard went 2-for-3 in game one and Jaramillo went 2-for-3 in game two.

The sweep secured an additional five points in the Cornerstone Cup rivalry trophy competition, as Azusa Pacific increased its overall lead in the athletic program-wide competition with Biola to a score of 55-45. The Cornerstone Cup presented by West Coast Sand & Gravel, which is awarded annually to the athletic department with the most success in head-to-head matchups throughout the year. The teams complete the season series on April 27th when the Cougars travel to La Mirada for a doubleheader.

Azusa Pacific now leads the all-time series with Biola, 62-28, including a 35-11 record at home against the Eagles.

GAME 1: Azusa Pacific 4, Biola 1

Kat Ung got the ball in game one; she struck out five and held the Eagles to one run in the complete-game effort.

The Cougars took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, and with the bases loaded, Melanie Abzun knocked a double to left field to score Racqual Espinoza and Kayla Jimenez. With runners in scoring position, Amanda Woods produced another run with an RBI groundout to score Emily Moran.

Azusa Pacific extended its lead over Biola to 4-0 in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Espinoza hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Jenna Gorman.

Biola's lone run came in the top of the fourth inning, when the Eagles took avantage of a wild pitch and scored from third.

GAME 2: Azusa Pacific 4, Biola 0

Espinoza started her sixth game of the season, posting her second shutout of the season to help the Cougars secure their first sweep of the season.

Much like game one, Azusa Pacific took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. Jaramillo singled to left center to score Megan Tucker and Espinoza.

Kayla Jimenez sparked the Cougars' third inning with a two-out triple down the right-field line. She then scored on an error to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Cougars added another run in the fourth inning when Amanda Woods hit a two-out single to center field which scored Emily Moran from second base.

Azusa Pacific is back in action March 23-24 at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif., where the Cougars will face three opponents from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (Simon Fraser, Saint Martin's, and Northwest Nazarene) and two from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (Humboldt State, and Cal State East Bay).
