AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific kicked off conference play 2-0 at the hands of the defending conference champions of California Baptist. With sophomore Kat Ung on the mound in game one, the Cougars fell 1-0, and in game two with Racqual Espinoza in the circle, the Cougars recorded a 9-1 lose.Â
Game two saw much of the Cougars pitching staff, Espinoza was credited the lose as juniors Megan Mejia and Gaby Grabowski both entered the game in an attempt to hold the Lancers.
GAME 1: California Baptist 1, Azusa Pacific 0
The Lancers lone score on the board was the result of a string of singles hit in the right place at the right time. Azusa Pacific's defense held their own playing an error-less seven innings.
The Cougars recorded one hit, a single down the left side courtesy of freshman Amanda Woods.
GAME 2: California Baptist 9, Azusa Pacific 1
The Lancers scored seven runs in the top of the first inning, Mejia entered the first inning with bases loaded and one out. Mejia held the Lancers to a scoreless five innings.
The Cougars found a place on the scoreboard in the fifth when Emily Moran hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score pinch runner Hannah McClure.
Grabowski took to the mound in the seventh inning, where she gave up one two-run home run and struck out two Lancers.
The game came to an end with a caught line drive to the hot corner.
What's Next: The Cougars will host UC San Diego in a non-conference game Friday, March 2 at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
