Will Ferris knocked down a three-pointer with just a little over a minute off the clock, but the early 3-0 advantage was the Cougars' only lead of the game. Concordia responded in a hurry, scoring the next seven baskets to make the score 15-3 with 14:29 left in the first half.
How It Happened: Concordia, a team regarded for its defensive pressure, forced the Cougars into 19 turnovers, as the Eagles finished the game with 21 points off turnovers. Concordia also posted a significant advantage in points in the paint (44-22). Concordia shot 49.2 percent from the field, including 36.4 percent (8-for-22) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Azusa Pacific shot 37 percent from the floor, including 30.4 percent (7-for-23) from the three-point line.
Turning Point: Though the Eagles held the lead throughout the game, Azusa Pacific was able to remain within striking distance for most of the first and second half. However, with the score at 57-47, with eight minutes left in the game, Concordia put some distance on the Cougars with a 15-2 run over the next seven minutes. That gave the Eagles a commanding 72-49 lead with just under two minutes left in the contest.
Azusa Pacific Standouts: The Cougars had two players score in double figures, as Ferris finished with a team-high 13 points, while junior
Ben Taufahema added 10 points. Senior
Darien McClain had a team-high four assists, and junior
Selom Mawugbe grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Concordia Standouts: Brian Chambers did a little bit of everything for the Eagles, as he scored 15 points to go along with seven steals, five rebounds and five assists. Geoff Gerlach scored a game-high 18 points, while collecting seven rebounds. Jamel White also scored in double figures, as he finished with 15 points.
What's Next: Azusa Pacific, now 5-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play, will travel to Point Loma on Dec. 8 for its fourth PacWest game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m.
