ORANGE, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific fell to Embry-Riddle in the second game of the Division II Tip Off Classic, by a final score of 79-70. For the second straight game, Azusa Pacific put together a strong first-half performance but could not maintain the momentum throughout the second half.
Senior point guard
Darien McClain led the Cougars in scoring with 18 points, and junior guard
Mandrell Worthy and junior forward
Selom Mawugbe also scored in double figures. Worthy scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while Mawugbe finished with 11 points.
In the first half, Azusa Pacific limited Embry-Riddle to 33 percent (10-for-30) shooting from the field, surrendering only one three-pointer. Offensively, the Cougars found early success behind the three-point line, knocking down six threes in the first 20 minutes of play to take a 33-28 halftime advantage.
Embry-Riddle opened the second half with a 10-3 run to take its first lead of the game just over two minutes into the second half. The Eagles never trailed again,
Embry-Riddle shot 48 percent (15-for-31) from the field after halftime, including five-of-11 on three-pointers. While Azusa Pacific shot a solid percentage in the second half at 47 percent (16-for-34), the Cougars went cold from the three-point line, hitting just 1-of-11 from deep.
With the loss, Azusa Pacific drops to 0-2 heading into a matchup with Drury (Mo.) in the final game of the Division II Tip Off Classic on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1:30 p.m., at Santiago Canyon College.
