Savanna Hanson posts 19-point, 10-rebound double-double to help lead Azusa Pacific to 74-70 road win over Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific picked up its second consecutive victory to open the season by holding off host Cal Poly Pomona, 74-70, Saturday afternoon at the CCAA/PacWest Challenge.

Junior guard Savanna Hanson led the Cougars with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, while junior forward Cierra Roufosse added 14 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Laura Pranger and junior guard Zoe March added nine points each, with March dishing out a game-high five assists.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 10-point lead after the first quarter, 23-13, and its well-rounded offensive balance helped maintain the lead throughout the opening half for a 36-29 halftime lead.

The Cougars built up a 19-point lead after opening the third quarter with a 14-2 run, but the Broncos fought back throughout the rest of the second half to cut the lead to six with a minute left in the game. Azusa Pacific's three leading scorers all fouled out in the final six minutes of the fourth quarter, but after the Broncos pulled within two, 72-70, late in the fourth quarter, Daylee Hanson knocked down a pair of crucial free throws in the closing seconds to seal the 74-70 victory.

Coming up next for Azusa Pacific is a pair of games at the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic hosted by Seattle Pacific. The Cougars take on host Seattle Pacific on Friday, Nov. 16, at 5:00 p.m., followed by a Saturday, Nov. 17 matchup against Western Washington.
