Making It Count

LA MIRADA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific clinched at least a share of the 2018 Pacific West Conference men's soccer championship with two games to play, and all it took was a single shot on goal.

Arturo Astorga cashed in the game's only goal in the 78th minute, breaking a scoreless tie while lifting the No. 8-ranked Cougars to a 1-0 win and a share of the conference title. Astorga scored his ninth goal of the year with an assist from Justin Glaser with a shot inside the right post in one of the few scoring chances generated by either team in the game.

With the win, Azusa Pacific extends its winning streak to 11 games and improves to 14-1-1 overall and 9-0 in PacWest play, while Biola falls to 6-8-1 overall, 4-4 PacWest. The Cougars also claim 10 points towards the Cornerstone Cup rivalry competition for winning the only regular-season contest between the schools in the sport of men's soccer. With a split of women's volleyball and a tie in Saturday's women's soccer night game, the Cougars now hold a 20-10 lead over the Eagles for the young season.

Astorga took three of Azusa Pacific's five total shots, but the Cougars generated a 5-2 edge in total shots. Brendan Fix saved Biola's only shot on goal, which less than three minutes after Astorga's score.

The final week of the regular season features a pair of home games for Azusa Pacific, first a rare Monday night matchup with Notre Dame de Namur at 5:00 p.m. The regular season wraps Friday night under the lights when the Cougars host Point Loma on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7:00 p.m.
