AZUSA, Calif. -- Just 48 hours after clinching a share of the Pacific West Conference men's soccer title, No. 8-ranked Azusa Pacific ensured sole possession of its championship with a 2-1 win over Notre Dame de Namur Monday evening.

Arturo Astorga scored in the first 15 minutes of the opening half, and Gabriel Costa scored less than eight minutes into the second half to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Notre Dame de Namur cut the lead to 2-1 in the 64th-minute on Josh Santillian's deflected shot from 18 yards out, but Azusa Pacific's defense held the Argonauts to just two shots the rest of the way.

Costa set up Astorga's first-half goal with a chip over the defenders on the left side to lead Astorga into the box. He finished it to the near post past the goalkeeper to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Isaac Bawa nearly made it a 2-0 lead in the final minute of the first half, when he directed a header on Jonah Peck's corner kick just inside the right post where an NDNU defender cleared it off the line.

Costa made it a two-goal lead within the first eight minutes of the second half with another chip from the top of the 18-yard box over several defenders and Argonauts goalkeeper Javier Santana. Costa he initially played David Kwinn into the box but a trio of NDNU defenders converged on Kwinn, who kept his balance after an initial challenge for the ball and touched it back to Costa for the shot.

Santillian scored in the 64th minute, cutting in from the left sideline towards the penalty box for a shot through the Cougar defense. His shot deflected off a defender and redirected it just inside the near post to cut the lead to 2-1. Santana helped keep the Argonauts within reach, stopping a 74th-minute penalty kick for one of his 11 saves in the game to keep the score at 2-1.

With the win, Azusa Pacific extends its winning streak to 12 games and improves to 15-1-1 overall and 10-0 in PacWest play heading into Friday's regular-season finale at home against Point Loma. Notre Dame de Namur falls to 4-10-2 overall, 3-5-1 PacWest.

Astorga and Costa are both now in double digits for goals this season, as Costa now has 13 goals and 12 assists (38 points) while Astorga now has 10 goals and eight assists (28 points). Nathanael Linquist made two saves in his fourth start of the season.
