BURNABY, British Columbia -- Azusa Pacific's defense pitched a shutout for three quarters and came up with a key fourth-quarter turnover that put the game out of reach in a 28-17 road win over Simon Fraser Saturday night.
James Hubbard caught a 78-yard touchdown pass from Tyrone Williams Jr. to extend the Cougars' lead to 21-0 in the final minute of the third quarter. However, Simon Fraser answered with scores on its next two possessions, cutting the lead to 21-10, and recovered an onside kick with 3:23 remaining in the game to have a chance to cut the lead to one score.
Quentin Frazier picked off SFU quarterback Miles Richardson on the first play following the onside kick recovery, returning it 43 yards to the one-yard line where Bryce Grandison punched it in to extend the lead to 28-10. Simon Fraser scored with 44 seconds remaining for the final 28-17 margin.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while Simon Fraser dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-5 in GNAC play.
How It Happened: Azusa Pacific kept Simon Fraser scoreless for the Clan's first 11 possessions, forcing five three-and-out possessions along with a first-quarter interception by Josh Olave in the end zone and consecutive third-quarter fumbles that led to both of the Cougars' third-quarter touchdowns.
Jesse Hanckel guided Azusa Pacific to its first score on a nine-play, 83-yard drive in the second quarter, finishing it off with a nine-yard keeper for his first career rushing touchdown midway through the second quarter. That score held through halftime, as the teams combined for just one first down on the final five possessions of the half.
Jacob Hall boomed a 74-yard punt from Azusa Pacific's 18-yard line early in the third quarter, and the ball was touched by a Simon Fraser player and recovered by Lavell Thomas deep inside Clan territory. That turnover gave the ball back to the Cougars at the SFU 8-yard line, and three plays later Grandison plowed across the goal line for the first of his two touchdowns on the day to give Azusa Pacific a 14-0 lead.
The next SFU drive also ended with a turnover, as Aaron Berry forced and recovered a fumble at the Cougars' 22-yard line. On the first play after the change of possession, Williams went deep and hit Hubbard in stride for a 78-yard scoring strike that made it 21-0 with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
Simon Fraser got on the board with a short field goal after a 13-play, 81-yard drive took 5:50 off the clock, and the Clan got the ball back with an interception in its own end zone with 5:47 to play. That turned into a 6-play, 80-yard touchdown drive, cutting the lead to 21-10, and the Clan recovered the onside kick with 3:23 left. Frazier intercepted a Miles Richardson pass and returned it to the one-yard line, where Grandison rushed for another score to push the lead to 28-10.
Turning Point: Simon Fraser's onside kick recovery with 3:23 to play preceded the game-turning interception by Frazier, who hauled in a pass near midfield and nearly returned it for a touchdown with a 42-yard return. In a matter of seconds, Azusa Pacific turned the Clan's opportunity to make it a one-score game back into an 18-point margin. The Cougar defense stopped the Clan's next drive, forcing a turnover on downs, and Simon Fraser didn't get the ball back until the final minute of the game.
