Four For Four

AZUSA, Calif. -- With Thursday evening's 4-0 win over Dominican, Azusa Pacific registered its fourth shutout of the year while extending its perfect start to Pacific West Conference play through four conference games.

Gabriel Costa set up the game's first goal, finding Justin Glaser on the left edge of the box for a low shot to the far post in the 18th minute, and he later scored on a second-half penalty kick. Costa has scored in seven consecutive games, and he's also registered assists in each of the past five games.

James Ndubueze scored his sixth goal of the year in the 27th minute, extending the lead to 2-0 after intercepting a pass intended for a defender in the center of the box and putting it away for the unassisted goal.

Just over five minutes into the second half, Costa's penalty kick added to the Cougars' 2-0 halftime edge, and Aleksandar Pumpalovic converted another penalty kick in the 60th minute for the final 4-0 margin.

Azusa Pacific produced a commanding 23-5 advantage in total shots, and Brendan Fix notched three saves to record the shutout and give the Cougars back-to-back shutouts for the first time this year.

Costa's goal moved him into a tie for the PacWest scoring lead (11 goals) with Dominican's Wilson Briggs, who entered the game with 11 goals on the season but was limited to just a single shot on the night.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 9-1-1 overall and 4-0 in PacWest play, while Dominican drops to 5-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the PacWest. The Cougars, who have won six straight overall and are unbeaten in the last nine games, host Holy Names on Saturday, Oct. 13, to continue a four-game homestand over the next two weeks.
