Cougars Golden Against Concordia

IRVINE, Calif. – It didn't go as planned but the end result was the desired one.

Despite giving up a 2-0 lead, Azusa Pacific won on a golden goal for the time since the 2015 as they knocked off Concordia 3-2 on a sunny and warm Thursday afternoon.

With the win the Cougars end a four-game in eight-day stretch without a loss as they move to 3-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in PacWest play.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Less than two minutes into the game Randi Macadangdang scored her first collegiate goal. She took a nice feed from Kelsey Bushman on the left side and, after a few dribbles, took on Concordia goalkeeper Kaelyn Whitcomb one-on-one. Her initial shot hit the far post but she easily deposited the rebound into an empty net.

Emilie Allum gave the Cougars a two-goal edge in the 33rd minute. She blasted a shot into the upper 90 on the right side from 20 yards out. Macadangdang assisted on the net-finder.

In the opening half Concordia had a handful of chances from inside the box but Cougar goalkeeper Zoey Bauman made three first half saves while another shot went off the crossbar.

Concordia took more of an aggressive role in the second half in tying the contest. With just over 15 minutes left, the home team broke through on a Reena Kang goal. After continued pressure, Carmany Jones tied the game with 1:50 left when she lifted a shot just over the outstretched arm of Bauman from 15 yards.

Just 50 seconds into overtime Kellie Yoshihara scored her second goal of the season with a shot from the rightside the clipped off the left post and into the back of the cage. Freshman Kaylee Nicoll assisted on the play for her first collegiate point.

QUOTEABLE

GOLDEN GOAL – The last time the Cougars won in overtime was Oct. 15, 2015 when a Stephanie Lossau goal in the second overtime gave Azusa Pacific a 1-0 win against California Baptist.

PACWEST IMPLICATIONS - The win keeps the Cougars atop the conference standings as they are the first team to complete four games. It is the first league loss for the Eagles who entered the game 2-0.

UP NEXT - The Cougars take a much needed week off before hosting Biola in Cornerstone Cup match-up on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
