IRVINE, Calif. – Ending a four-game in eight-day stretch, the Cougars dropped a 2-0 decision to Concordia on Thursday afternoon.
After the setback Azusa Pacific takes the next week off before hosting Biola on Oct. 4.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Moments after hitting the cross bar the home team took an early lead. Concordia scored in the 17th minutes off a turnover in the Cougars back third. Julian Font scored his first goal of the season after receiving a feed from Jose Huerta in the box.
The Cougars were able to create opportunities in their offensive third the remainder of the half but couldn't get on the scoreboard despite their 8-3 shot advantage.
With just under nine minutes left Andrew Boyd had a great one-touch volley from six yards that was destined for the back of the net. However, Saul Ocampo was able to make a fortunate the save.
As quickly as the Cougars nearly tied the game, Concordia all but sealed it with a goal in the 83rd minute. Off a Heurta corner kick, Michael Oakson found the back of the net after a scramble for a loose ball in front of the goal mouth.
QUOTEABLE
"I think we had a lot of controlled positions in their half and entered the final third a number of times but unfortunately the ultimate goal at the end of the day is elusive," head coach Dave Blmoquist.
On Boyd's Near Goal – "It looked like a goal because he was alone in front of an empty net. It was quality football by us to get in that position but the goalkeeper just got lucky and caught it between his legs."
