Cougars Soar Over Golden Eagles

SAN DIEGO – Azusa Pacific couldn't have asked for a better start to the season.

The Cougars completed their first day of competition at the Seaside Invitational with a 3-0 win against Cal State L.A. on Friday evening.

Natalie Klapp led the way with an 11-kill match while fellow outside hitter Madison Ogas recorded an eight-kill evening.

Tomorrow the Cougars complete the four-match, two-day completion against No. 4 Alaska-Anchorage and Simon Fraser.

QUOTEABLE

"We did a lot of things well tonight," said head coach Chris Keife. "We played really clean volleyball. We especially passed the ball well and did a great job serving. Everyone contributed to this win."

EARLY RALLY

Despite trailing early (11-8), Azusa Pacific scored 17 of the frame's final 22 points to claim the early lead. The Golden Eagles were negative in the hitting department (-.026) while Azusa Pacific claimed an effective .269 mark.

Similar to the opening stanza, the Cougars found themselves down early in the second set but rebounded just fine as the set wore on. Down by a 5-2 count, Azusa Pacific went on a 10-2 scoring spurt and never trailed the rest of the way.

In the third set, the Cougar trailed briefly and 8-7 and 9-8 but took the lead and 10-9 and slowly nudged their lead forward before winning the contest on their sixth match point.

OWN WORST ENEMY

Cal State L.A. attackers hit just .035 for the match. They had 30 errors on 115 attempts with 34 kills.

PAIR OF 3-0s

It is the first time since 2011, an Azusa Pacific team won their first two matches of the season in a sweep. Earlier in the day, the Cougars beat UC San Diego.
