SAN DIEGO – Down to their last point, Azusa Pacific fought off four match points to post a thrilling 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-23, 16-14) win against No. 4 Alaska Anchorage.
The Seawolves are the defending West Region champion and reached the NCAA Championship match last season.
Sara Wagenveld led the way with a 13-kill afternoon while also tallying two block solos and seven block assists. Natalie Klapp added a double-double (12 kills, 12 digs) with Bailey Henington digging up a match high 22 balls.
The Cougars concluded their four-match swing at the Seaside Invitational with a Saturday night match against NCAA qualifier Simon Fraser.

The Cougars couldn't crawl out of the early deficit they created for themselves. Despite being down 8-2, Azusa Pacific rallied to tie it on three separate occasions but couldn't take the lead.
Azusa Pacific flipped the script in the second frame as they raced out to an early 8-2 lead. The Seawolves pulled within two points three times but never closer. Similar to the first set, there was never a lead change.
Alaska Anchorage took a five-point lead (9-4) in the first stages of the stanza and never relented. The Cougars couldn't find a rhythm offensive as they produced a negative hitting mark (-.083).
A tension filled fourth set saw Azusa Pacific hold a pair of five points leads (18-13, 19-14) only to see Alaska Anchorage battle back. Knotted at 23-23, the Cougars came up with a block (Alliyah Morrison, Wagenveld) and a kill from Klapp to complete the thriller.
Despite scoring four of the first five points, the Cougars saw the Seawolves rally and take a 14-10 lead. With Shaylah Kagehiro serving Azusa Pacific chipped away and scored six straight to close out the contest.

"It was an ugly start and it, honestly, didn't feel good. Not every win will feel good but we kept the pressure on and fought hard together and pulled out an important win," the sophomore Henington said.

For the first time since the 2012 season the Cougars have started the season with three straight wins.
