LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A. played a solid second half in posting a 1-0 victory in the season opener for both team.
Despite holding an 11-10 edge in overall shots with a 5-0 advantage on corner kicks, Azusa Pacific couldn't find the back of the cage on very warm late Thursday evening.
FIRST HALF STALEMATE
Azusa Pacific held a 4-2 edge for shots on frame but, Cal State L.A. had the best chance in the opening frame. Tatiana Zuvic's free kick from just outside the box ricocheted off the crossbar in the 43rd minute. Â
EAGLES BREAK THROUGH
Zoey Bauman kept the game scoreless when in the 57th minutes when she stretched for a save on Victoria Arredondo's shot from inside 10 yards.
The home team got the game-winner with just over 15 minutes left. Paulina Chaidez took a through ball from McKenna Gleason and chipped a shot from 20 yards out that went over the out stretched arm of Bauman.

Cal State L.A. had never beaten the Cougars heading into Thursday's contest. Azusa Pacific now leads the all-time record between the schools is now 6-1-1. The Cougars have outscored their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foes by a 20-3 count in those contests

Azusa Pacific takes the next week off before travel to northern California for a pair of games against CCAA foes. The Cougars play Chico State on Sept. 7 then travel to perennial west region power Sonoma State (Sept. 9). Â
