IRVINE, Calif. – The offensive glory went to the Cougars one through five hitters.
The top half of the line-up was outstanding as the Cougars posted a 7-4 PacWest victory against Concordia on Thursday.
In recording the three-run triumph, the top five spots in the line-up recorded 10 of the Cougars 12 hits. Both Cam Bennett and Pablo O'Connor each had three hits while Justin Gomez and Michael Staudinger drove-in three runs. Adrian Tovalin added a two-hit game to contribute to the quality afternoon.
It was the first game in the Cougars (35-8, 22-7 PacWest) final road league series of the season. The second contest is set for tomorrow at 3 p.m.
O'Connor started the scoring before an out was recorded with a RBI single which brought home Bennett. Two batters later Staudinger hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield allowing O'Connor to touch home plate. Staudinger picked-up two more RBI in the third frame when his third triple of the season scored Bennett and Adrian Tovalin.
Concordia cut their deficit in half in the fourth stanza. Haloa Dudoit scored on a wild pitch and Jair Donovan scored on a sacrifice.
The final runs of the game for the Cougars came in the fifth when Gomez blasted his sixth homerun of the season to right centerfield. The three-run shot scored O'Connor and Bennett.
The Eagles (21-22, 17-13) put together a serious threat in their final at-bats. Down 7-2, they proceeded to load the bases with no outs. After scoring a pair of runs, Mitch Williams worked out of the jam by striking out the final three batters.
Not to go unnoticed was the strong outing of Michael Fairchild. For the seventh time this season he went at least seven inning in earning the victory. The righthander went eight strong frames and allowed just four hits with a strikeout. He improved his overall record to 8-1.
