Soaring Over the Eagles

IRVINE, Calif. – The fireworks that is the Azusa Pacific offensive, travels quite well.

For the 15th time this season, and the eighth time away from home, the Cougars scored in double figures as they posted an 11-5 victory against Concordia.

After Friday's win the Cougars own a 36-8 overall record with a 23-7 mark in PacWest games. Azusa Pacific looks to go for the four-game series sweep tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.

Similar to yesterday's win against the Eagles, the top of the batting order made major contributions to the triumph. Cam Bennett posted a four-hit contest to bring his two-game total in the series to seven. In these two games he has also scored six times. Adrian Tovalin went 3-for-5 with five RBI while Michael Staudinger went big fly for the second straight game during his two-hit, four-RBI game.

The Cougars offense showed its offensive might from the start as they scored four and three runs in the first and second innings respectively. In the first inning Pablo O'Connor had an RBI base knock then Tovalin hit a two-run homerun followed by a Staudinger long ball for a quick 4-0 edge. In the second stanza Tovalin added a two-run double and Staudinger gathered a RBI on a groundout.

Staudinger added two more RBI in the sixth inning when his single through the right side scored O'Connor and Bennett. The home had little response for the nine-run deficit. Concordia scored their first run in the sixth frame.

In the seventh stanza each team scored twice. The Cougars runs came courtesy, once again, from O'Connor and Tovalin run-scoring base knocks. Concordia scored their two runs after a base hit and a run scoring double play. Ryan Land's RBI single in the eighth inning then a Dillon Millar run scoring hit in the ninth stanza wrapped up the scoring for the home team.

On the mound Billy Oxford earned the victory. The righthander went seven and scattered 10 hits while striking out five. In his first season with the Cougars he owns a 9-1 record heading into his final start of the regular season.
