Cougars Are Winners ... Again

AZUSA, Calif. – Even a slow start couldn't end the Cougars winning ways.

Azusa Pacific overcame an early four-run deficit to run their winning streak to 13 straight with a 7-4 win against Fresno Pacific on Thursday evening.

It is the longest win streak for a Cougar squad since the 2007 season when they won 24 straight.

In their PacWest opener Azusa Pacific with a strong bullpen a timely scoring. Despite being outhit by an 11-7 margin, the Cougars worked four walks and used Sunbird miscues to their advantage.

Mychael Goudreau and Pablo O'Connor each went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Azusa Pacific offense.

Azusa Pacific's bullpen went the final 7.1 innings. Royal Bradley went 4.0 innings in the middle frames to earn his second win of the season. He allowed just two hits and struck out a pair. Mitch Williams finished the second and pitched the entire third inning. Hayden Jorgenson finished the job by allowing just one hit and faced the minimum six batters in the final two innings. It was his third save of the season.

In the opening frame the Sunbirds sent eight men to the plate en route to a two-run, three-hit inning. The visitors also took advantage of a Cougar error to take the early lead. Fresno Pacific had an opportunity to score more but they left the bases loaded. Fresno Pacific crossed the plate two more times with four hits in the second inning to take a four-run lead.

In the third stanza Azusa Pacific tied it up with four runs on just one hit. A Goudreau RBI single was the only hit. Adrian Tovalin had a sacrifice fly while Goudreau and Quincy Quintero scored on a Sunbird error. Goudreau gave the home team the lead for good in the next inning with his second run scoring base knock of the game.

The score remained 5-4 in Azusa Pacific's favor until the seventh inning when O'Connor hit his team leading eighth homerun of the season with a two-run shot.

The four-game set between the squads continues tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
