SAN FRANCISCO – A season best effort was more than enough.
Azusa Pacific tied their season high with 21 hits as they romped to a 15-2 win against Academy of Art in the first game of the four-game set.
While the offensive was impressive in the Cougars ninth straight win, Michael Fairchild continued his steady effort on the mound. The senior threw his second nine-inning complete game of the season. The righthander struck out five and scattered nine hits to up his record to 6-0.
A host of players had multi-hit games. Both Quincy Quintero and Michael Staudinger each had four hits while driving in two and three runs respectively. Adrian Tovalin also had a three RBI afternoon.
Less than eight pitches into the contest, the Cougars had a two-run lead. Mychael Goudreau extended his reached base streak to 27 with a lead-off single then scored five pitches later on a Pablo O'Connor home run to centerfield.
Azusa Pacific plated a pair of runs in the second frame as Tovalin and Staudinger had back-to-back RBI singles. Academy of Art scored in their portion of the inning on an RBI groundout.
Both pitchers settled into a groove until the Cougars busted the game open in the middle innings. Sean Aspinall gave his team a 5-1 lead after a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning before a six-run sixth inning all but secured the victory. All but six of Azusa Pacific's hits came with two outs with four different players driving in at least one run highlighted by Quintero's two-run double to left centerfield.
Even with an 11-1 edge, the Cougars added a pair of runs on Tovalin and Aspinall RBI singles in the seventh inning. The home team added their final run in the eighth inning on a base knock. Azusa Pacific rounded out the scoring in the last stanza as Quintero and Cam Bennett each drove-in a run.
