TUCSON, Ariz. – After winning with 14 runs less than 24 hours earlier, an Azusa Pacific hurler was a major cog in their 11th straight win.
Billy Oxford set the tone on the mound as the Cougars posted a 3-0 win against Malone (Ohio) on Friday afternoon.
The transfer junior went seven innings where he struck out six and allowed just six base runners. The righthander upped his record to 4-0.
Offensively, Adrian Tovalin had a three-hit day with Mychael Goudreau tallying a two-hit contest. Justin Gomez drove-in two of the Cougar runs.
The bottom of the seventh was the only scoring frame. The Cougars took advantage of three Malone errors while banging out two hits in crossing the plate three times. Grant Gamble scored the first run on an error by the pitcher. After the pinch runner crossed the plate, Gomez followed with a base knock to score Pablo O'Connor and Cam Bennett.
Malone put together a threat in the ninth inning by loading the bases with no one out. Dillon Miyashiro, working his second inning of relief, worked out of the jam with a double play and a ground out for his second save of the season.
Azusa Pacific closes their three-game trip to Tucson on Saturday against No. 14 St. Cloud State at 10 a.m. (PDT).
