Nine Straight

AZUSA, Calif. – The Cougar winning train keeps jugging along just fine.

Azusa Pacific won its eighth then ninth games in-a-row as they swept a four-game set from San Francisco State by claiming victory in a twin bill on Saturday.

Game One – Azusa Pacific 7, San Francisco State 3

Despite be in an unfortunate spot early, Azusa Pacific got what they needed to be on the right side of the scoreboard by the end.

San Francisco State took their first lead of the series with a pair of runs in the first inning. Myles Franklin crossed home when he stole third base then touched home on a wild pitch on the same pitch. Bryce Brooks hit an RBI single moments later to give the Gators a quick two-run cushion. The visitors tacked on another run, as well as chased Cougar starting pitcher Kyle Murray, in the third inning. Brooks hit his second run scoring single in the game to push his squad's lead to 3-0.

The Cougars began their comeback in the fourth stanza when Pablo O'Connor hit his team leading fifth homerun of the season. In the next inning Azusa Pacific put a four-spot on the scoreboard all with two outs. O'Connor started the scoring with an RBI single. Two batters later Justin Gomez hit a three-run line-drive opposite field homerun giving the Cougars a 5-3 advantage.

The final runs came in the seventh inning as Azusa Pacific tacked on two more runs. Mychael Goudreau smashed a solo homerun to start the frame then four batters later Pablo O'Connor scored on a passed ball with two outs.

The foursome of Mitch Williams, Billy Sanford, Hayden Jorgenson and Layne Henderson came out of the bullpen to throw the last 6.2 innings. They gave-up just four hits while striking out six without allowing a run.

Game Two – Azusa Pacific 3, San Francisco State 2 (10 Innings)

What looked to be an offensive game to close series ended up being the most dramatic as the hurlers took control.

Much like the opening game, the Gators took the early lead. San Francisco State took advantage of three Cougar errors in the opening inning by scoring a pair of runs. Azusa Pacific tied the game in their half of the inning with a Mychael Goudreau homerun and a Quincy Quintero fielder's choice which scored Adrian Tovalin.

Both pitching staffs continued to put zeros on the scoreboard as the inning ticked away. After the first inning, there were just eight total hits between the two teams.

After nearly scoring the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, the Cougars won the game when Goudreau scrambled home on wild pitch with two outs and the base loaded.

Cougar reliever Dillon Miyashiro threw the final 3.0 innings where he gave-up just one hit and struck out four to earn the win.
