Season Best Effort Gets Win

AZUSA, Calif. – The Cougars offense found a good rhythm early and kept their foot on the preverbal pedal.

The Cougars posted a season high .422 hitting percentage as team to top Hawai'i Pacific in three sets (25-21, 25-7, 25-16).

HOW IT HAPPENED: Azusa Pacific held the lead throughout the first set but were challenged. Despite holding a 9-2 edge, Azusa Pacific saw the Sharks comeback, in part because of good serving, to tie the score late. However, the home team was strong down the stretch in closing out the opening frame win. Madison Ogas had five kills in the opening stanza without an error on 10 swings to aid in the Cougars .351 hitting percentage.

In the second set the Cougars dominated. They scored the first five points and never relented. Azusa Pacific continued their strong hitting (.394) while the Sharks hit -.098. The hitting display continued in the third set led by Sara Wagenveld's nine kills. In the final set the home team posted a .531 hitting mark to leave no doubt.

All told in the match the Cougars trailed on just three occasions – all of which came early in the third set.

.400 OR BETTER: A trio of Cougars hit at least .400 led by Wagenveld's .619 hitting effort. The middle blocker had a team high 16 kills and just three errors on 21 attempts. Ogas tallied a .417 mark with 11 kills with Julianne Miller went for a .474 hitting percentage and nine kills.

BLOCKING IS FUN TOO: Wagenveld not only had a great night hitting but she tallied two block solos and three block assists as the Cougars outblocked the Sharks 9-3.

QUOTABLE: "All the attackers controlled the ball well and we made smart choices while still being aggressive," said head coach Chris Keife.

PACWEST & POSTSEASON: The Cougars remain in second place in the PacWest as they raised their league record to 12-4 (19-4 overall). The second set of NCAA Regional rankings gets released on Wednesday. Last week the Cougars were fourth with the top eight making the postseason.

UP NEXT: The Cougars finish off their home slate with a 6 p.m. Thursday match against Hawai'i Hilo.
