LA MIRADA, Calif. – Without a good rhythm Azusa Pacific struggled on Saturday evening.
The Cougars fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) to their rivals as they dropped their first PacWest match of the season.
With the setback the 24th ranked Cougars move to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in PacWest matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED: In the opening set the Cougars looked to be in a comfortable spot as they took leads of 10-6 and 17-14 only to see the home team rally. Down the stretch the Eagles scored eight of the final 10 points to seal the opening frame rally.
Biola held the upper hand early in the second stanza as they took a 14-11 lead. Azusa Pacific posted a rally of their own by putting together a 10-4 scoring spurt in taking a 21-18 advantage; forcing a Biola timeout. The Eagles, once again, finished strong by winning seven of the last nine points and clinching the set on their first set point.
During the third set the Eagles jumped out to a 13-9 lead and never let the Cougars back within a single point the rest of the way.
HITTING WOES: For just the third time this season Azusa Pacific was held beneath a .175 hitting percentage as the tallied a .173 mark. The Cougars entered the match with the second best hitting percentage in the conference (.251).
BROKEN STREAKS: With the setback the Cougars saw their nine-match winning streak, the longest since 2011, come to a close. Also ending was the squad's 14 set winning streak as well as it 13 consecutive wins against PacWest foes.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Cougars host Chaminade on Thursday at 6 p.m.
CORNERSTONE CUP: The fall potion of the Cornerstone Cup, which is presented by West Coast Sand and Gravel, is now complete. With Cross Country the final sport to compete head-to-head in the fall, Biola holds a 20-10 edge. Ten points are available per sport. Since the women's soccer game tied and the volleyball two-match series was split the points are divided in half. Biola won the men's soccer contest 2-0.
