AZUSA, Calif. – A strong test from Chaminade pushed Azusa Pacific but in the end the Cougars prevailed 3-1 (25-16, 15-25, 25-22, 25-17) on Thursday evening.
The 25th ranked Cougars move their record to 15-2 overall and 7-1 in PacWest contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Azusa Pacific's back row defense was solid a majority of the night. Bailey Henington led the way with a 22-dig effort. Natalie Klapp was just behind her with a 17-dig performance. Azusa Pacific held a 71-58 edge in team digs.
After splitting the first two sets, the Cougars slowly enforced their will on Chaminade (9-9, 4-6 PacWest). The Cougars never trailed the rest of the match. While the home team was tested in the third set, a combination of Silverswords errors and effective hitting led to a fourth stanza win.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Madison Ogas had a team high 14 kills and partnered that with 12 digs for her second double-double of the season.
QUOTABLE: "That's a very good Chaminade team. Our defense was really solid tonight. I'm really pleased with how the back row played," head coach Chris Keife said. "We need to clean-up a few things before Saturday's match but I like where we are at right now."
HOME COURT EDGE: The Cougars have won 12 straight matches inside the Felix Event Center. Their last home defeat was a five-set loss to Concordia on Oct. 1, 2016.
SHOWDOWN: With the win the Cougars set-up not only a Top 25 match-up on Saturday but a contest for first-place in the PacWest. Azusa Pacific travels to Riverside, Calif. for a 3 p.m. contest against No. 6 California Baptist (16-0, 8-0 PacWest)
