Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Stephen Hinkel

Second Half Leads Lancers to Win

AZUSA, Calif. – Looking to pull an upset, the Cougars put themselves in good position early but couldn't keep the momentum going.

After playing a stingy first half effort, Azusa Pacific couldn't hold keep fifth-ranked California down during the final frame as the Lancers recorded a 3-0 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cougars defense bent a little in the first 45 minutes but didn't break as Brenden Fix made three saves, including a diving block in the 11th minute, to keep the score 0-0.

The Lancers broke through in the 57th minute as Sebastian Wiesboeck chipped a shot over Fix after receiving a pass from Chris Heckbenberg.

With goals one minutes apart late in the second half, California Baptist (11-0-2, 7-0-1 PacWest) all but secured the win. Aidan Apodaca, who came into the game as the nation's leading goal scorer, took a feed from Wiesboeck and tapped the ball over the goal line in the 78th minute. Exactly one minute later Apodaca scored his 23rd goal of the season on a penalty kick.

PACWEST NOTES: With four games left Azusa Pacific is 3-5-1 (10 points) in league games and sits in eighth place. The Lancers remain in the best position to win the PacWest in their final season in the league before beginning the transition to NCAA Division I. They are tied with Notre Dame de Namur (22 points each).
