AZUSA, Calif. – The passion of a rivalry game was there. Unfortunately the result wasn't ideal.
Cal Poly Pomona got a golden goal from Dante Medina in the 102nd minute for a 1-0 victory against Azusa Pacific.
It is the third straight season these two schools, separated by just 11 miles, have played a one-goal game. The Broncos have prevailed in each of those contests.
The tightly played game was evident on Thursday's stat sheet as well. The Broncos held a 14-13 edge in total shots while Azusa Pacific took eight corner kicks compared to Cal Poly Pomona's six.
Postgame Interview with Coach Blomquist
A fairly quiet first half saw the Cougars with one solid opportunity as a Dane Johnson header off a corner kick midway through frame sailed just wide. Cal Poly Pomona had a free kick at the top of the box but the opportunity from Sergi Monso didn't have much velocity behind it. The visitors held a 5-2 edge in overall shots and had the only shot on goal.
Less than 10 minutes into the second frame the Cougars had two shots in-close blocked aside by the Cal Poly Pomona defense and had ensuing corner kick go for naught. Azusa Pacific kept that flurry going as they had two more corner kicks and two blasts saved by Bronco goal keeper Jason Trejos.
Cal Poly Pomona responded with a strong offensive effort over the next several minutes but their scoring attempts were block aside by a stout Cougar backline.
Neither team could mount a serious threat in the first overtime. Medina's game winner was his second goal of the season. He has both of the Broncos goals this season.
Azusa Pacific looks to rebound quickly as they host Sonoma State on Saturday evening.
