AZUSA, Calif. – While the goal column never moved from the opening kick, there was plenty happening.
Azusa Pacific and Chico State played to a 0-0 draw on Saturday evening at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
It is the first scoreless game for Azusa Pacific since the 2014 season when they played Hawaii Hilo.
"The girls were prepared, ready and focused. I thought we knocked around the ball at times and got a bit unlucky at times as well. We didn't create as many quality chances as I would have wanted but I thought we deserved to win. I thought we were the better team. That part is frustrating," head coach Jason Surrell said. "I did think we made some pretty good strides as ateam and I feel good moving forward."
In the opening frame there was just one shot on frame as the team's worked to find momentum. Azusa Pacific had a handful of scoring opportunities with crosses in the box while the Wildcats worked the ball deep into their offensive zone but never recorded a shot on a goal.
During the second half the Cougars created enough opportunities on offense to generate four corner kick opportunities. For the game they held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks and a 10-3 advantage in total shots.
"We had our chances. We had enough corners to get a goal but that's the way the game goes sometimes but I can't be disappointed in the effort and attitude of the girls tonight," Surrell said.
Defensively they limited the Wildcats to just one shot on goal which Zoey Bauman had little trouble in saving.
"After Thursday's results we had to go over a few things and just went over a bunch of stuff we thought we knew but had to go over in practice. And tonight we did a good job of implementing those changes," Surrell concluded.
On Thursday the Cougars six-game homestand continues with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Cal State Monterey Bay.
